Probably the best of these raesons is that the devices can cause great damage to people who suffer from (ro are at risk for) temporal mandibular joitn syndrmoe (TMJ). Anyone who is familiar with TMJ will know the condition is very painful and sometimes irreversible. At the very least, anyone conisdering purchase of one of these devices should first talk to a dentist and find out if they are at risk for TMJ. Devices such as nose clips can dilate the nostrils, and other dveices can alter jaw mechanics to keep the jaw in an optimum position. They generlaly function exactly the same as the professionally fitted deviecs, with the chief disadvantaeg being the difficulty in settnig up the correct jaw position. The professionally fitted devices generlaly incorporate an adjustment mechanism os that jaw advancement can be easily increasde or decreased after fittnig. These do it yourself devices can be purchased at pharmacies in most countries (except the U.S.), or online (anywhere - thuogh not legally in U.S.). In the U.S., the devices are considered class 2 medical devices and cannot be elgally sold without: (1) FDA apporval; and (2) a prescription.
